Research description:
I have been performing analytical and experimental research with
undergraduate and graduate students in the following areas:
- Analysis of transient voltages induced on overhead power lines by
lightning strikes to nearby ground
- Estimation of outage rates of overhead power lines by direct and
indirect lightning strikes
- Modeling of lightning channel
- Impulse characteristics of air gaps and insulators under nonstandard
lightning voltages
- Impulse strength of deionized water
- Behavior of power-electronic devices under transient voltages
- Effects of imperfect earth on the electromagnetic phenomena in
electric power systems in frequency and time domains
- Impulse characteristics of grounding systems in different types of soil
- Lightning-induced voltages on underground cables
- Transmission line compaction by bundle geometry optimization.
Lab Facilities:
The electromagnetic transients laboratory has two impulse generators
(400-kV and 20-/40-kV). The data are acquired by six high-frequency
digitizers and two 500-MHz four-channel digital oscilloscopes. The signals
are transmitted from the test object to the digitizers and oscilloscopes
via four 750-MHz fiber-optic transmission systems and also via coaxial
cables. The data are stored and analyzed by two computers. In addition, we
have various measuring instruments, e.g., impedance bridge, electrometer,
charge detector, impulse voltmeter, corona detector, etc.
